From a simple backyard experiment to an award-winning agribusiness enterprise, Bibar’s Farm in Barangay San Pablo, Tabon-tabon, Leyte demonstrates how innovation and perseverance can transform a small initiative into a model MSME.

Established in 2010 by Hercito “Tor” Bibar, the farm began when the former media professional decided to venture into agriculture to gain greater control of his time while exploring sustainable livelihood opportunities. What started as a small project eventually grew into a two-hectare integrated and diversified farming system, now classified as a small agribusiness enterprise.

Over the years, Bibar’s Farm has evolved into more than just a production site. It is now an accredited Learning Site for Agriculture (LSA I) recognized by the Agricultural Training Institute, where farmers and agricultural workers learn modern and diversified farming techniques. The farm partners with TESDA to host agricultural training programs, through initiatives such as the Farmer Field School on High-Quality Palay Production, the farm has trained hundreds of scholars, including 189 graduates in 2021.

Like many agricultural enterprises, Bibar’s Farm encountered challenges along the way. Pest infestations, flooding, unpredictable weather, labor-related issues, and financial instability tested the resilience of the business. Despite these obstacles, the farm continued to improve its practices and operations, eventually earning recognition for its productivity and innovation.

The farm’s productivity journey gained momentum when it was introduced to the programs of the RTWPB-VIII during the search for nominees for the Productivity Olympics. Through Lean Management training and technical assistance, the farm improved its operational efficiency, optimized labor utilization, and increased output without significantly raising costs.

These improvements led to significant achievements. Bibar’s Farm was named Regional Productivity Olympics Winner in 2023, became a National Finalist, and once again secured the Regional Winner title in 2025. The recognition also opened opportunities for further development, including participation in the Digital Transformation Development Program for MSMEs at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).

In addition, Bibar’s Farm benefited from the Adjustment Measure Program (AMP) of the DOLE, receiving a ₱400,000 grant used to construct a mechanical flatbed dryer. This facility significantly improved the farm’s post-harvest handling and the quality of its palay seeds.

Today, Bibar’s Farm continues to serve as an example of resilience and innovation in agriculture. From its humble beginnings to becoming a recognized learning site and productivity awardee, the farm highlights how MSMEs can grow, adapt, and contribute to the development of local farming communities.
