NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Flora, APAYAO- The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board – Cordillera Administrative Region (RTWPB-CAR) gathered employers and employees from micro and small enterprises, together with representatives of the agricultural sector, for a wage consultation aimed at gathering sectoral input on a proposed minimum wage adjustment at the region last 22 September 2026.
The event was attended by the Flora, Apayao Mayor Jeofrey T. Blas, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Regional Director and RTWPB-CAR Chairperson Jesus Elpidio B. Atal Jr., MNSA, and DOLE Assistant Regional Director Atty. Olivia O. Obrero-Samson. Other members of the RTWPB- CAR also joined the proceedings online to listen directly to the perspectives of the sectors concerned.
During the consultation, participants were united in calling for the current minimum wage rate of CAR, which was P505.00, to remain unchanged, citing the higher cost of living, fuel, and persistent inflation. Owners of micro and small establishments raised concerns that their modest income could not absorb a higher labor cost.
One participant offered a concrete illustration: from a gross daily income of P800.00, deducting the P505.00 minimum wage leaves only P295.00 — an amount that must still cover utility expenses. For their part, farmer-owners shared that they can only afford to engage seasonal workers and increasing the wage will add to their labor cost, aside from the cost of providing meals and liquor at the end of each day’s work, which is part of the community’s custom.
Following the consultation, participants took part in an orientation on Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) and First Aid provided by DOLE Apayao Field Office. These trainings are essential in helping establishments safeguard the health and safety of their employees. (Albert M. Palma)
