STATEMENT

On the Role of NWPC in Wage-Related Legislative Discussions

This is to inform the public that the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) does not exercise legislative powers nor possess the authority to encroach on the functions of the Congress of the Philippines to enact, amend, or repeal laws.

The NWPC’s advisory role during legislative deliberations is mandated by Republic Act No. 6727 (Wage Rationalization Act). This participation involves the submission of evidence-based reports, computations, and simulations prepared in coordination with other government agencies. These efforts serve as key inputs in crafting evidence-informed policies that carefully balance employer interests, workers’ rights and welfare, and economic stability. All submissions to Congress are made with full respect for their independence and recognition that final policy decisions rest with them.

Beyond rhetoric, we remain faithful to the mandate given to us by Congress to examine the complex economic landscape and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes that serve the interests of workers and employers through fair and balanced wage policies — one where data drives the decisions, and the long-term stability of our economy remains the priority.
